Privacy & security

What to check before you test

Getting tested is personal, and where your data goes matters. Here's what we look at in every review — and the honest caveats by service.

Self-pay vs. insurance

Most services here are self-pay, so nothing reaches your insurer and no Explanation of Benefits is generated. Nurx is the exception — it bills insurance, which is cheaper but does create a record.

Discreet billing

Charges rarely say “STD.” STDcheck and HealthLabs show “HealthLabs.com,” Priority shows “SFHT,” and Nurx shows “Nurx.co” on your statement.

HIPAA & data sharing

All are HIPAA-compliant, but it's not flawless: Nurx and Wisp have had website tracking-pixel data-sharing issues, and a 2019 vendor breach (AMCA) exposed millions of Quest and Labcorp patients.

Anonymity & reporting

You can usually test privately without insurance, but labs are legally required to report positive results for certain STIs (like HIV and syphilis) to public health authorities.
