Quest Diagnostics review

4.0/5 · 1.7/5 on Trustpilot (1,381 reviews)

Quest Diagnostics is one of the two national labs that almost every other testing service quietly routes to. Through QuestDirect you can order STD tests yourself — no doctor's appointment — and walk into one of 2,250+ Quest centers (many inside Walmart and grocery stores) to give a sample. You're buying directly from the lab rather than a middleman. It's broad, accurate and private (self-pay), but the consumer experience is corporate and pricier than the specialist services. Here's our full review.

Our verdict

Is Quest Diagnostics worth it?

Quest Diagnostics is the national lab itself — when you order through STDcheck, HealthLabs or many others, this is often where your sample ends up. Buying direct through QuestDirect cuts the middleman: order online with no appointment, walk into one of 2,250+ centers (including Walmart and grocery-store locations), and an independent physician authorizes the order for you. It's self-pay, so nothing hits your insurance, and results post to the MyQuest app in 2–5 days. Two honest notes: the consumer experience is corporate (its overall Trustpilot/BBB scores are poor, though those are dominated by billing and wait-time complaints, not the QuestDirect workflow), and in 2019 a breach at billing vendor AMCA exposed data on roughly 12 million Quest patients. For a no-appointment test at the source lab, it's a solid, legitimate choice.

Quest Diagnostics in depth

Our hands-on take on what Quest Diagnostics gets right, where it falls short, and how it stacks up.

What buying from the source lab actually gets you

Many of the popular STD storefronts are, underneath, just a friendlier checkout in front of the same national labs — and Quest is one of the two. Ordering through QuestDirect cuts out that reseller layer: an independent physician authorizes your order, you walk into one of 2,250+ centers (many tucked inside Walmart, Albertsons and Safeway), and your sample is run on the same FDA-cleared assays clinics rely on. The accuracy is essentially the reference standard. What you give up by going direct is polish — the workflow is corporate and self-serve rather than hand-held.

Where it loses to the specialists

Direct pricing is fair, but it isn't the cheapest. Quest's expanded 7-infection panel runs $282 and the basic panel $149, plus a small physician fee from about $6 — and a faster, STD-focused storefront like STDcheck turns results in 1–2 days against Quest's 2–5. There's also no treatment or consult bundled in on a positive; you're handed off to your own provider. If you're torn between the two national labs, our Quest vs Labcorp comparison lays out where each wins — Labcorp tends to undercut Quest on expanded panels and adds at-home kits.

How it scores

Quest Diagnostics rated by category

We score every service on the things that actually matter, then weight them into one overall rating.

4.0

Overall · out of 5

Accuracy

4.9/5

It's the reference lab — the FDA-cleared assays many competitors resell are run here.

Coverage

4.7/5

2,250+ patient service centers, plus sites inside Walmart, Albertsons and Safeway.

Privacy

4.2/5

Self-pay keeps it off insurance; MyQuest portal only — but a 2019 AMCA vendor breach hit ~12M Quest patients.

Panel breadth

4.0/5

Single tests and STD panels via QuestDirect; not as STD-tailored as the specialist storefronts.

Value

3.6/5

Direct pricing is fair but panels run higher than STDcheck/HealthLabs, and there's no bundled treatment.

Experience

3.3/5

Corporate, self-serve UX; poor parent-brand review scores driven by billing/wait-time complaints.

Is it right for you?

Who Quest Diagnostics is — and isn't — for

Choose Quest Diagnostics if…

  • You'd rather buy straight from the national lab than a reseller
  • You want a center nearby — including inside Walmart or a grocery store
  • You want self-pay testing that never touches your insurance
  • You're fine managing results yourself in the MyQuest app
  • You may also want non-STD bloodwork from the same provider

Look elsewhere if…

  • You want the cheapest full STD panel — specialist services undercut it
  • You want treatment or a consult bundled in on a positive
  • You'd rather test at home (QuestDirect still needs a center visit)
  • You want a hand-held, STD-focused experience over a corporate portal

The honest take

Quest Diagnostics pros & cons

  • Self-pay only, so results never appear on your insurance record
  • Results in the MyQuest app/portal, typically 2–5 days
  • Same lab quality clinics and hospitals rely on

Cons

  • Corporate, self-serve experience; poor overall Trustpilot/BBB (billing & wait-time complaints)
  • Full STD panels cost more than specialist services like STDcheck or HealthLabs
  • No treatment or bundled consult on a positive result
  • QuestDirect still requires an in-person center visit (no true mail-in panel)
  • 2019 AMCA billing-vendor breach exposed data on ~12 million Quest patients

Step by step

    Order on QuestDirect

  2. 2

    Visit a center

Book or walk into one of 2,250+ Quest patient service centers, including many inside Walmart and grocery stores, for a quick blood draw and/or urine sample.

  3. 3

Confidential results post to the MyQuest app or web portal, usually within 2–5 days.

  4. 4

Good to Know

Quest Diagnostics review FAQs

Common questions about Quest Diagnostics — cost, accuracy, results and how it works.

What is QuestDirect and how is it different from regular Quest?

QuestDirect is Quest Diagnostics' consumer service: you order your own tests online without a doctor's appointment (an independent physician authorizes the order), then visit a Quest center to give a sample. Regular Quest testing is ordered by your own doctor and usually billed to insurance; QuestDirect is self-pay and consumer-initiated.

How much does Quest STD testing cost?

Through QuestDirect, the basic 4-infection panel is $149 and the expanded 7-infection panel is $282, plus a small per-test physician fee (from about $6). Single tests run roughly $52–$105 (syphilis $52, HIV $85). It's self-pay (HSA/FSA accepted); specialist services often beat it on full-panel bundles.

Does Quest offer an at-home STD kit?

QuestDirect's standard STD testing still requires an in-person center visit — it's online ordering, not mail-in collection. Quest has separately introduced a rapid at-home STI device aimed at women's health, but that's distinct from the main QuestDirect service.

Is Quest STD testing private?

Yes. QuestDirect is self-pay, so results aren't sent to your insurer and don't generate an Explanation of Benefits. Results live in the secure MyQuest portal. Note that in 2019 a breach at Quest's billing vendor AMCA exposed personal and financial data on roughly 12 million Quest patients.

How long do Quest results take?

Most STD results post to the MyQuest app or web portal within 2–5 business days of your center visit.

Why are Quest's online reviews so low?

Quest's overall Trustpilot and BBB scores are poor, but those reflect billing disputes and wait times across its entire national operation — not the QuestDirect self-pay STD workflow specifically, which independent testing reviewers rate well for accuracy and convenience.
