At-home STD testing FAQs
Are at-home STD tests accurate?
Yes, when used correctly. The kits we recommend run samples through CLIA-certified (often CAP-accredited) labs using the same assays clinics use, so accuracy is high — the main variable is testing within the right window after exposure, not the kit itself. Rapid at-home PCR tests like Visby use the same molecular method as a lab.
How do at-home STD tests work?
You order a kit online, self-collect a sample at home (finger-prick blood, urine, or a swab), and either mail it to a lab in a prepaid envelope or — with a rapid kit — read the result at home in about 30 minutes. Mail-in results post online in a few days, usually with a clinician available if anything is positive.
What's the most private way to test at home?
All the kits here ship in discreet, unbranded packaging and are self-pay, so nothing reaches your insurer. Be aware that a couple of telehealth brands have had website tracking-pixel privacy incidents (noted in their reviews), and labs are legally required to report certain positive results to public health.
Can I get treated if an at-home test is positive?
Sometimes. Most kits include a consult on a positive, and services like Wisp and Nurx can prescribe treatment directly. For others, you'd take the result to your own provider or a telehealth service.
